Wastewise Post Audit Brainstorm

Today the Enviro team had a Wastewise Post Audit Brainstorm to come up with ideas for how Halsey Drive can become more Waste wise! We have some excellent ideas! Keep a look out for them next term!

Waste Wise Audit Results!!!

Here are the results from our Waste Audit on June 4th:

Good News:
 We are recycling 91% of our paper!!!!! 

Not So Good News:

100% of our organic waste is going to the landfill!!
63% of other re-cycling is going to the landfill!!

Our challenge is to change the numbers of waste going to the landfill.
Over the coming terms the Wastewise Enviro team will be putting a plan of action into place to help us do that! 
If you have any ideas of how we can do that let one of the Enviro team, Mrs Taege or your teacher know.

Plastic is not Fantastic

Here are some awesome posters about plastic from room 4 students.

Plastic Fantastic?

Room 4's Kiwi Kids read a text about plastic. They then had to explain if they thought plastic was fantastic.  

Here are some of their explanations.

I think plastic is not fantastic because it can hurt our environment. It can hurt our environment because it is not biodegradable it is photo degradable so it will use light to break it down then stay in the soil and pollute it. This can happen by gases burning from sunlight and heat so it can poison the Earth and ruin our environment.

I think plastic is not fantastic because our wildlife get caught in plastic bags and die. This could lead to extinction for the species. Also plastic bags are waterproof so they don’t rot or rust away. This means that one piece of plastic stays for lots of years.

The journey of waste.

“Ahhh don’t eat me!” I cried. This was the most terrifying time of my 3rd life! Just as I was about to be eaten I jumped off the monster’s arm and into this dark building. “Um.. hello, hellooo” I said in fright, I had no idea where I was. I wasn’t supposed to be treated like this I was just a paper bag!!!

Suddenly I feel the ground shake. “W-what’s happening” I cried. I began to scream and shout, hoping that someone would hear me, but it was no use. The building roof began to raise, I was really mad at the department of rubbish. “ This is not supposed to happen to the roof!” I murmured angrily to myself. “It’s just like they’re trying to give us recyclable paper away”

That’s when I realised I was tied in an awful smelling cave, ok maybe a cave was a bit crazy but you get the idea! I tried to look for holes in this stinky cave. I don’t know why no one gets that all i want is to relax and hang out with my mates in the recycle bin. But some of these humans just don’t seem to understand.

I woke up again, dry warm and coughing dust. Birds flew high up above, searching for poor food scrapes also mistreated and abandoned. I could have been reused or recycled, I should have been living the life of royalty. But for now here I am stranded in an unknown wasteland desert that stinks. But the worst part is for me, for now really means forever!!!!!

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

The key question 'Is New Zealand really clean and green?' has got room 3 working hard to investigate what things we as people are creating and how we are disposing of it as waste.  Here is one of our attempts at classifying what we should do with our waste.
